Ahora o nunca

Renate Herberger, a quien entrevistamos en Ballena Tales V, regresó a Bahía. Su objetivo es nadar desde Panamá hasta Nicaragua y llamar la atención sobre el hecho de que nuestros mares necesitan de un urgente respiro. De lo contrario morirán debido a la pesca excesiva, la explotación y la falta de respeto. Sólo el 0,01% de la superficie de los océanos es dedicada a santuarios marinos, pero al menos un 13% es necesario para evitar la muerte de todas las especies marinas en 15 - 30 años el tiempo.

Vasti y Michelle de Puerto Jiménez se unieron a Renate en un "rito de pasaje marino", una especie de ritual de iniciación en el cual cruzaron el Golfo Dulce de Punta Encanto a Puerto Jiménez, todo el tiempo seguidas por una lancha. Renate pensó que nunca lo harían, pero las tres llegaron sanas y salvas después de una trayectoria de 9 horas y media. Nadaron completamente vestidas, por temor a la picadura de las medusas. Éstas están prosperando debido a la contaminación y la falta de depredadores: la tortuga de mar! El siguiente trecho de Renate será de Rocas de Viuda a Quepos. Ella cuenta con muy poca financiamiento, depende de la generosidad de los residentes, y está haciendo un esfuerzo titánico para completar su objetivo en pro de los Santuarios Marinos.

Now or never

Renate Herberger, whom we interviewed in Ballena Tales V, has returned to Bahía. Her objective is to swim from Panamá to Nicaragua and to draw attention to the fact that our seas need an "urgent break"; otherwise they will be dying from overfishing, exploitation and lack of respect. Only 0,01 % of the ocean's surface area is set aside as marine sanctuaries, but at least a 13 % is needed to avoid the death of all marine species in 15 - 30 years time.

Vasti and Michelle from Puerto Jiménez joined Renate in a Marine "Rite of Passage", some sort of initiation ritual, by crossing the Golfo Dulce from Punta Encanto to Puerto Jiménez, all the time followed by a boat. Renate thought they would never make it, but the three of them arrived safely after 9½ hours. They swam fully dressed, for fear of being stung by jelly fish which thrive on pollution and lack of predators: the sea turtle! Renate´s next stretch will be from Rocas de Viuda to Quepos. She has very little funding, depends on the generosity of the residents, and is making a titanic effort to complete her goal in favor of Marine Sanctuaries.
